 StudentScholars Chess Competition – May 2026

 

Introduction

StudentScholars Private School & Learning Center proudly presents the Chess Competition 2026! Open to students ages 4 to 12, this event encourages the development of critical thinking, focus, and sportsmanship in a fun and challenging environment.

Whether your child is new to chess or an experienced player, this competition offers an excellent opportunity to learn, compete, and grow.

Event Details:
Date: Saturday, May 2nd, 2026
Location: StudentScholars Private School Units 2 & 3, 60 Riviera Drive, Markham ON L3R 5M1
Eligible Ages: 4 
to 12

Each age group will participate during its scheduled time slot, followed by an award ceremony immediately after.

​Participation Fee: $25
To secure your child’s spot, both the registration form and payment must be submitted before the deadline.

 

Competition Time Schedule

Participants are asked to arrive at least 10 minutes before the competition begins.

Competition Start time: 10:30 am ​

Registration Deadline:
Wednesday, April 29th, 2026, at 5:00 PM. No registrations will be accepted after this deadline.

Please note: A minimum of 8 participants per grade/group is required for the competition to proceed. If this requirement is not met, you will be notified at least 2 days in advance of the competition date.

Age Groups, Focus Areas & Time Allocations

🟢 Group 1 (Ages 4–6)

  • Focus: Fun learning of piece names and basic moves.

  • Format: Informal play with no strict rules or timers.

  • Time Allocation: Approximately 10–15 minutes per session/game to keep it light and engaging.

🟡 Group 2 (Ages 7–9)

  • Focus: Introduction to tactics, basic rules, and short timed games.

  • Format: Timed games encouraging strategic thinking and time management.

  • Time Allocation: 10 minutes per player per game (around 20 minutes total).

🔵 Group 3 (Ages 10–12)

  • Focus: Full chess games under tournament rules, scoring, and advanced strategy.

  • Format: Standard competitive matches with official chess rules and timers.

  • Time Allocation: 20 minutes per player per game, plus small increments per move (approx. 40–60 minutes total).

 

Competition Rules

  1. Registration:

    • Open to students aged 4 to 12. Registration must be completed before the deadline.

  2. Divisions & Grouping:

    • Players are grouped by age and skill into Beginner and Advanced divisions as needed.

  3. Game Format & Timing:

    • Group 1: Casual play with no timers (10–15 mins/game).

    • Group 2: Timed games with 10 minutes per player.

    • Group 3: Tournament-style matches with 20 minutes per player plus increments.

  4. Conduct & Sportsmanship:

    • Respect towards opponents, judges, and the game is mandatory.

    • Unsportsmanlike conduct may lead to disqualification.

  5. Equipment:

    • Chess boards and clocks will be provided.

    • Personal chess sets are not required.

  6. Match Progression:

    • Depending on the number of participants, the competition may follow a round-robin or knockout format.

    • Winners advance according to the tournament structure.

  7. Time Management:

    • Players must be ready to start their matches on time.

    • Failure to do so may result in forfeiture.

  8. Scoring:

    • Wins, losses, and draws will be recorded.

    • Tie-breakers will be resolved through additional games or rating criteria.

  • Gift voucher for 1 free class from StudentScholars
    (Transferable to any child aged 4 to 13)

2nd Place:

  • Silver Medal

  • Certificate

3rd Place:

  • Bronze Medal
